Last Days in the Desert será la película de clausura del FICCI 55
La fiesta más grande del cine en Colombia tendrá en su ceremonia de clausura la premier Latinoamericana de la más reciente película de Rodrigo García Barcha. Protagonizada por Ewan McGregor, Tye Sheridan, Ayelet Zurer, Ciarán Hinds y Susan Gray, el director se separa de sus tradicionales historias centradas en personajes femeninos para entregarnos un conmovedor drama que va más allá de los días de Jesús en el desierto, hablando de las intensas relaciones entre un padre y sus hijos. Los asistentes al festival podrán compartir con el director dentro de las actividades del Salón FICCI.
Luego de su estreno mundial hace cinco semanas en el Festival de Sundance, Last Days in the Desert llega a Cartagena para cerrar con broche de oro la edición 55 del FICCI. Este drama religioso y profundamente humano fue escrito y dirigido por Rodrigo García Barcha, el hijo mayor de los colombianos Gabriel García Márquez y Mercedes Barcha Pardo. La película muestra el peregrinaje por el desierto de Yeshua, Jesús en hebreo. En su viaje el profeta se encontrará con una familia en la que verá reflejados sus propios problemas e incertidumbres.
Last Days in the Desert parte de la historia bíblica de Jesús en el desierto, pero lo sustancial del relato es invención de García. La película nos presenta un Jesús (Ewan McGregor) atravesado por la contradicción de ser humano y divino a la vez. En su preparación para la misión que debe cumplir, Yeshua enfrenta al demonio, encarnado por el mismo McGregor, en una doble interpretación magistral.
García Barcha fue director de fotografía de varias películas antes de iniciar su carrera como director con Cosas que diría con solo mirarla (2000), en la que participaron las reconocidas actrices Glenn Close y Cameron Díaz y con la cual recibió el premio a mejor película de la sección "Una cierta mirada" del Festival de Cannes. El éxito logrado por su ópera prima lo ha ratificado posteriormente con la dirección de filmes como Diez pequeñas historias de amor (2001); Nueve vidas (2005), con el que ganó el Festival de Locarno; Almas pasajeras (2008), Madres e hijas (2009); uno de los segmentos de Revolución (2010), y Albert Nobbs (2011). García ha consolidado un estilo de cine intimista, de sutil capacidad de observación de los dramas humanos y con el respaldo de grandes actores como Naomi Watts y Samuel L. Jackson, entre muchos otros. También ha incursionado en la dirección de series de televisión como Los Soprano y Six Feet Under.
En Last Days in the Desert trabajó con el fotógrafo mexicano dos veces ganador del Oscar, Emmanuel "El chivo" Lubezki; el editor Matt Maddox; los compositores Danny Bensi y Saunder Jurriaans; el diseñador de producción Jeannine Oppewall, y la diseñadora de vestuario Judianna Makovsky.
La ceremonia de clausura del FICCI 55 se llevará a cabo el día martes 17 de marzo, en el Teatro Adolfo Mejía a partir de las 8 de la noche, con la presencia de Rodrigo Garcia Barcha, quien por primera vez visita el Festival Internacional de Cine de Cartagena de Indias.

Last Days in the Desert to Close FICCI 55
Colombia's most prestigious film festival will come to a close with the Latin American premiere of Last Days in the Desert, Rodrigo García Barcha's most recent film starring Ewan McGregor, Tye Sheridan, Ayelet Zurer, Ciarán Hinds and Susan Gray. In a move away from the stories centered on female characters we have come to expect, García brings us a moving drama that transcends Christ's last days in the desert to an exploration of father-son relationships. Festival-goers will have the chance to talk to the director in person at Salon FICCI.
After making its world premiere five weeks ago at Sundance, Last Days in the Desert will be closing the 55th edition of the Cartagena International Film Festival (FICCI). This religious, yet deeply human drama was written and directed by Rodrigo García Barcha, the eldest son of Colombians Gabriel García Márquez and Mercedes Barcha Pardo.
Last Days in the Desert is based on the bible story of the time Yeshua (Jesus in Hebrew) spent in the desert, but it is the personal touch García brings to the film that lends it substance. On his search for guidance for the mission he must fulfill on Earth, the prophet comes across a family that mirrors his own doubts and inner conflicts. Ewan McGregor incarnates a man torn between his human and divine nature, giving a truly memorable performance as both Jesus and the devil.
García Barcha directed the photography of several films before making his directorial debut with Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her (2000), which starred the famous actresses Glenn Close and Cameron Diaz and won Best Picture in the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes. His directing skills were later ratified with films like Ten Tiny Love Stories (2001), Nine Lives (2005), which won the Locarno Festival, Passengers (2008), Mother and Child (2009), a segment of Revolución (2010), and Albert Nobbs (2011). Over the years, García has developed a very personal style of filmmaking based on his subtle observation of human drama, brought to life by acclaimed actors like Naomi Watts and Samuel L. Jackson, to name just a few. He has also directed television series like The Sopranos and Six Feet Under.
In Last Days in the Desert, García worked with two-time Oscar-winning Mexican photographer Emmanuel "The Goat" Lubezki, editor Matt Maddox, composers Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans, production designer Jeannine Oppewall and wardrobe designer Judianna Makovsky.
The closing ceremony will take place on Tuesday, March 17 at 8 pm at the Adolfo Mejía Theater, where Rodrigo Garcia Barcha will be making his first appearance at FICCI. |
