Estas son las Gemas que brillarán en el #eleganteFICCI56
Diez producciones, que incluyen los más recientes trabajos de algunos de los directores que han revolucionado el lenguaje del cine mundial, así como películas relevantes y premiadas a nivel internacional durante el último año, y que demuestran que el cine es un arte de extraordinaria vitalidad y una ventana privilegiada al mundo, conforman el grupo de Gemas. Amos Gitai, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Chantal Akerman, Nanni Moretti, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Jafar Panahi y Brillante Mendoza, serán algunos de los directores que engalanarán esta sección del 56º Festival Internacional de Cine de Cartagena de Indias –FICCI-, que se llevará a cabo del 2 al 7 de marzo.
Las Gemas que veremos en esta edición del FICCI, son una selección que se destaca por la diversidad de historias que pasan por la comedia, el absurdo, la ironía, la sensualidad, algunas con una profunda, delicada y tierna humanidad, que dan cuenta de un año marcado, a nivel mundial, por un cine lleno de autenticidad. Encabezando la lista está Chevalier de Athina Rachel Tsangari (Grecia), un juego de hombres que intentan demostrar quién es el mejor, ganadora del Premio a Mejor Película del Festival de Cine de Londres y de la Mención Especial del Jurado en el Festival de Sarajevo. Taxi del iraní Jafar Panahi, quien se hace pasar por taxista para poder realizar una película acerca del cambio social en Irán, ya que el gobierno de ese país lo vetó para realizar filmes. Taxi recibió el Oso de Oro y el Premio FIPRESCI del pasado Festival de Berlín y el Premio a Mejor Película de Lengua Extranjera entregado por la Sociedad de Críticos de Cine de San Diego (EE.UU.). The Assassin (Nie yin niang) del multipremiado director taiwanés Hou Hsiao-Hsien, ganador en Locarno 2007 del Leopardo de Honor a toda una vida dedicada al cine, y quien por esta producción, donde una justiciera tiene que elegir entre el hombre que ama y romper con la "Secta de los Asesinos", recibió el Premio a Mejor Director en Cannes 2015. The Assassin está nominada a Mejor Película de Lengua no Inglesa en los Premios BAFTA del Reino Unido.
También se encuentra la producción islandesa Rams (Carneros) de Grímur Hákonarson, ganadora de la sección Un Certain Regard del pasado Festival de Cannes y de la Rana de Plata en Camerimage, el festival más grande del mundo dedicado al arte de la fotografía, que nos cuenta la historia de dos hermanos quienes, después de 40 años, vuelven a hablarse para salvar lo más importante para ellos. Chronic, película protagonizada por Tim Roth y dirigida por el mexicano Michel Franco, ganador del Premio a Mejor Guion en Cannes 2015 y nominado al Premio Horizontes en el Festival de San Sebastián, nos presenta la vida de un enfermero de pacientes terminales con los que desarrolla una relación de dependencia. Rabin, The Last Day, coproducción entre Israel y Francia del cuatro veces nominado a la Palma de Oro, Amos Gitai, retrata en un estilo vibrante, entre el documental y la ficción, los últimos días del líder israelí Isaac Rabin y los hechos que condujeron a su asesinato. Esta película llega al FICCI después de recibir el Premio Especial del Jurado en el Festival de Cine Europeo de Sevilla.
Taklub del filipino Brillante Mendoza, uno de los directores homenajeados en el FICCI 56, con este trabajo recibió una Mención Especial del Jurado Ecuménico de Cannes, en el cual retrata la lucha y fortaleza de los sobrevivientes de una catástrofe natural en su país. De Asia, también estará la película tailandesa Cemetery of Splendour (Rak Ti Khon Kaen) de Apichatpong Weerasethakul, director ganador en Cannes, Róterdam, Sao Paulo, Vancouver y Venecia, entre otros festivales. Una película que nos transporta más allá de la realidad física, al mundo espiritual y afectivo, por la cual recibió el Premio Lighthouse en el Festival de Cine de Pančevo (Serbia) y el Premio a Mejor Película de Lengua No Inglesa en los Premios de la Sociedad en Línea de Críticos de Cine (EE.UU.).
El FICCI también se complace en presentar No Home Movie de Chantal Akerman (Bélgica, Francia), película participante de la Competencia Oficial del pasado Festival de Toronto y nominada al Leopardo de Oro en Locarno, vemos la forma como la directora se despide de su madre que poco a poco se desvanece, al igual que ella, en medio de los recuerdos y de los espacios íntimos que comparten. Es también la oportunidad para recordar a esta directora esencial que murió en 2015. Finalmente, Madre mía (Mia madre) del ganador de la Palma de Oro (2001) y el Oso de Plata (1986), Nanni Moretti, con la cual recibió el Premio del Jurado Ecuménico de Cannes y que presenta la historia de una directora de cine que intenta rodar una película y llevar una vida normal, a pesar de la enfermedad de su madre y la adolescencia de su hija.
Las diez películas de esta sección, que desde el año 2013 es competitiva, buscan recibir el Premio Gemas RCN, que consiste en un plan de promoción televisiva por USD$50.000 a través del canal RCN para su lanzamiento en Colombia.

The Gems that Will Shine at FICCI 56
The 10 films competing in the Gems section of the 56th Cartagena International Film Festival (FICCI) this March include recent productions by directors of the stature of Amos Gitai, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Chantal Akerman, Nanni Moretti, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Jafar Panahi and Brillante Mendoza, all of whom have revolutionized the language of cinema in their own way, as well as award-winning productions and outstanding films of the past year that, together, are evidence the industry is very much alive and kicking.
This year our Gems section offers a veritable window on the world, with films that range from the funny and the absurd to the ironic, the sensual and the deeply moving in a year that has been marked by productions of immense authenticity and humanity. Heading the list is Chevalier by Athina Rachel Tsangari (Greece). Winner of Best Motion Picture at the London Film Festival, this film about a game in which men attempt to prove their manhood received a Special Mention by the jury of the Sarajevo Festival. Prohibited from making films by his government, Iran's Jafar Panahi had to pass himself off as a taxi driver to make Taxi, a film about social change in his country. Taxi won a Golden Bear and the FIPRESCI Prize at the 2015 Berlin Film Festival and the San Diego Film Critics Society's Best Foreign Language Motion Picture Award. The Assassin (Nie yin niang) by the multi-award-winning Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien, who was presented with a Leopard of Honor for his life's work at the 2007 Locarno Festival, brings us a film in which a female avenger has to choose between the man she loves and breaking with a "Sect of Assassins". The Assassin won Best Director at Cannes last year and is nominated for Best Non-English-Language Motion Picture at the UK's BAFTA Awards.
The roundup continues with Grímur Hákonarson's Rams, winner of the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes last year and a Silver Frog at Camerimage, the world's largest cinematography festival. This Icelandic film tells the story of two brothers who break an icy 40-year silence to save what matters most to them. Winner of Best Screenplay at Cannes in 2015 and nominated for the Horizontes Prize at the San Sebastián Film Festival, Chronic, a film about a nurse who develops co-dependent relationships with his terminally ill patients, stars Tim Roth and was directed by Mexico's Michel Franco. Rabin, The Last Day is a Franco-Israeli co-production by four-time Palme d'Or nominee Amos Gitai, who narrates the final days of the Israeli leader Isaac Rabin and the events leading up to his assassination in an energetic style that moves effortlessly between fact and fiction. This film received the Special Jury Prize at the Seville Festival of European Cinema.
Taklub is a film by Brillante Mendoza, one of the directors FICCI 56 will be paying tribute to. A portrait of communities that continue to work amid catastrophe in the director's native Philippines, this production received a Special Mention by the Cannes Ecumenical Jury. Also from Asia we bring you the Thai film Cemetery of Splendour (Rak Ti Khon Kaen), a film by Apichatpong Weerasethakul that transports the spectator beyond the physical plane. In addition to taking home awards at the Cannes, Rotterdam, Sao Paulo, Vancouver and Venice festivals, Cemetery of Splendour won the Lighthouse Prize at the Pančevo Film Festival (Serbia) and Best Non-English-Language Motion Picture at the Online Film Critics Society Awards.
No Home Movie by Chantal Akerman (Belgium, France) featured in the Official Competition of the 2015 Toronto Festival and was nominated for a Golden Leopard at Locarno. Here we see the director saying goodbye to her mother, who gradually fades, just like Akerman herself, into shared memories and intimate spaces. A fitting way to celebrate this pivotal director who left us in 2015. Finally, Mia madre by Palme d'Or (2001) and Silver Bear (1986) winner Nanni Moretti received the Ecumenical Jury Prize at Cannes. In this production we see a film director trying to shoot a film while attempting to lead a normal life, despite having to care for her sick mother and teenage daughter.
The Gems section of FICCI has been competitive since 2013 and the winner will receive the Gems RCN Prize, which consists of a television promotional plan valued at USD$50.000 for the release of their film in Colombia via the RCN channel.
